"And---and I know this is going to come as a big disappointment to a lot of you---there will be no hockey blogging."

Ah, yes, the glory days of the Blogging Internet, when "hogging" needed its own phrase. Hopeful that Scott's move to the barren wastelands of upstate New York--think Canada without the culture--will bring that back.

"While it is true that I am smarter about politics than, say, Joe Klein or Richard Cohen"

So is my cat. Or my daughters's lizards. Or their gerbils, both of whom are dead. But five years later, the WaPo still insists on giving them some of its real estate. (And, five years later, Cohen is still telling us he's smarter and funnier than his betters; geez, at least when Albert Goldman did it, he told interesting stories about the alleged subject while fluffing himself.)

I rather like the swoopers/bashers distinction, because it does seem to match up with how different people think about and approach writing. (For example, MS Word was clearly programmed by people who are bashers. It is wretched for those of us who keep changing our minds about things like formatting partway through. Scrivener, on the other hand, is perfect for swoopers.)

I often think of the first stage of swooping as "barf on a page" that then gets tidied and sorted; the first stage involves a sort of feral inspiration that has to be grabbed when it gets close; the second is the sort of work that can be done even when feeling bored and not very interested in the work (at least for me).

Something I've pointed out to students in the past is that some of us like to think on the page (swoopers) while others like to think it all through first, then write (bashers). I'm very visual and erratic in my focus, so swooping works for me.
