Make that three popular series about World War II: don't forget "Hogan's Heroes," from Bing Crosby Productions.

My father did not fight in WWII. The Pacific theater is the one I think of first because two uncles were in the Navy and both saw action there. One -- the airplane mechanic -- was at Pearl the morning of the attack and he saved an admiral and maybe one or two other big wigs. Both uncles had joined the Navy because they needed jobs; even then the military was a place for working class men to find jobs.

I'd add "In Harm's Way" to the list of great World War II movies set in the Pacific. It might seem odd that it was made during the Vietnam War era, but as I recall all of its combat scenes were set on the high seas, where we don't see the Japanese in close-up - which allowed audiences to not think of the Vietnamese while watching the movie. The importance of naval battles also suggests a reason why Europe was a more popular setting for Hollywood movies: you can send six guys walking across a field and you've got a European Theater movie, but you probably need to stage big battle scenes on water to make a Pacific Theater movie. Practically speaking, the former is a lot cheaper than the latter.

Thanks for this; my dad was a Marine on Guadalcanal and he always said, sort of ruefully, that contrary to later island invasions he simply walked ashore. It wasn't until they headed for the airstrip that things changed.
Despite that connection, and a fairly extensive knowledge of WWII (2 uncles in Europe another in submarines) I found The Pacific rather unwatchable and perhaps it was because I was too close.
All the movies mentioned are well worth watching but one thing my dad said (only when he was old and forgetting) was that the movies can't replicate the smell.
