4 Newburgh men arrested in plot to shoot down military planes, bomb synogogue
Four Newburgh men were arrested Wednesday evening and charged with plotting to shoot down military planes using missiles at Stewart Airport and bomb synagogues, the Associated Press reported.
The suspects, identified as James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen, were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the United States and plotting to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles, the U.S. attorney's office said.
According to the complaint filed by the U.S. attorney's office, Cromitie met at Masjid al-Ikhlas, a mosque in Newburgh, with an informant, and talked about wanting to die a martyr and go to "paradise."
The informant said Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces.
Cromitie also expressed an interest in doing "something to America," the complaint said, according to the Associated Press.
